Now the Pok. Journal Editorial Page is upset about how the MTA payroll tax is hurting our local economy. They were pretty happy with it 15 months ago when they let incumbents run for reelection on repealing the MTA payroll tax when all they did was roll it back for some. They also dinged me as too rigid for wanting full repeal of the MTA payroll tax. Here is a letter to the editor I wrote on Nov. 1, 2012: The Journal editorial page questioned the “logic” of my opposition to the $1.9 billion tax increase on New Yorkers in exchange for a partial roll back of the MTA payroll tax on schools and smaller businesses. I stand firmly behind my complete opposition to continuing a tax on job creation. My opponent and the Journal support the tax hike and partial roll back of the MTA payroll tax and fail to recognize that since the deal was cut we continue to have higher unemployment than the national average and the worse business climate in the nation. I am elated that some businesses in the area were unburdened by the partial roll back. However, I recognize that many small businesses couldn’t survive even since the roll back because of our worst in the nation economic climate. Witness the empty storefronts that line our streets in part because our leaders cut a short term deal instead of enacting a complete repeal of a tax on job creation. Meanwhile, IBM is moving more and more jobs from Dutchess County further upstate, outside of the MTA Payroll tax region. Employers that remain in Dutchess, like major healthcare providers, are still subject to millions of dollars in MTA payroll taxes which are passed on to patients. Half-measures like the deal cut in Albany last year that don’t address the root problem of unsustainable spending and the resulting unbearable taxation, do little to improve our state’s business climate and long term economic viability.
