Now we have a Facebook page to talk to each other, whether we know each other or not, its a great opportunity to sound out ideas. When I returned to the area four years ago I approached the shire about getting support for a Blues and Jazz Festival over the winter months only to hit a brick wall. The person who was responsible for arts promotion in the council was positively underwhelmed by the idea we might want a festival in winter and then wouldnt listen when I asked about the idea of a Fringe Festival. I have experience with a Fringe Festival in Broome and helped run it for four years. A Fringe Festival is cheap to run as all you need is promotion. Outdoor venues and room for buskers is required and someone to organise small art events. Two of the most successful art events we ran in Broome were the dogs of Broome project and Fridge Art. The dogs of Broome included photos, paintings, drawings and small sculptures from community members that were all about dogs. We had a poetry section and someone wrote a song about dogs. The whole community was encouraged to participate with very small children up to older community members making art and displaying it in an old building. We also had a fantastic event one year called Fringe Art - Fridge Art where community members were asked to paint something on old fridge doors and the resulting artworks were displayed on street corners during the festival. As you can see it is fun and cheap and only needs support from our council. Lets have festivals that include all the community not just those that belong to clubs and other organisations. I would be pleased to talk to anyone about this idea and I can be contacted at Chesterwood Books six days a week.
