Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him in front and in the rear, he selected from all the choice men of Israel and they arrayed themselves against the Arameans. . . . He said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the sons of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you.” — 1 Chronicles 19:10, 12 (NASB) - The Israelites were in a jam – their army was facing both the Arameans and the Ammonites. Israel’s commander, Joab, divided his army, with each half ready to help the other if necessary. Joab’s direction to help one another gave his army a guiding principle as they entered battle: two are better than one (Ecclesiastes 4:9 – 10). Indeed, we are always stronger when we come to each other’s aid, a truth that applies far beyond the battlefield.
