Now, why would they want to stuff kids heads full with facts that will be available to them from the internet by simply rolling up their sleeve. Seems like all you need to teach kids to survive in the coming job market is how to ask questions so that a computer search program (like Google) can understand what information you need ... Oh, then, of course, they say about 80% of research is always in formulation of the question (so you need a little training in logical thought as well as the current state of science in industry); then, 10% is in finding the data and knowing how to analyze the it and the other 10% is in getting what you need (out of the data) to answer the questions. So, maybe kids will continue to need some training in information-search logic, critical reading, data analysis -- and what about kids who will be able to look at the work-related problem and determine what information is needed themselves because of past experience problem-solving with groups. Actually, I thought we agreed (within the information sciences fields, in particular) that their was too much questionable-data out their already -- you know, the garbage-in, garbage-out theory. So, there is NO support for building better ways to use the human brain for data and information storage; the future will depend on how well people can be trained as information processors and decision-makers. So, where is the support for using multiple-choice testing to replace teacher-led group training in decision-making and analysis? There isnt any. So, the impetus has to be coming from those who believe that analytic capabilities young minds will not be needing for controlling their own lives.
