"Nowadays nobody is surprised to hear that somebody is going on exchange programme, participating at joint study programme, studying at more than one university in different countries, etc. But do you know when European Community launched its first ‘Joint Study Programme’? In fact, students nowadays are as eager as ever to learn, however, they expect to choose what they learn, how they learn and when they learn, according to their individual needs and interests. And they are ready to do it in their country of origin, or by going abroad, or through courses offered online or via blended forms of learning that combine all of these possibilities. In the global environment, competition for talent and knowledge becomes fiercer. By the end of the decade, the number of internationally mobile students will grow from 4 million today to 7 million. Europe continues to attract around 45% of all international students. But higher education institutions in other parts of the world increase their quality and become attractive destinations for international students. This means that Europe needs to be prepared for this increasingly global, open and competitive labour market. European universities are expected to become key players in the global knowledge economy and internationalisation is identified as the key response to globalisation.
