Ntu Kee I tuu o o o If one says that Udo quarters is one of the - TopicsExpress

Ntu Kee I tuu o o o If one says that Udo quarters is one of the greatest villages in Ubulu Uku, that person may not be wrong after all. This village is very unique in many senses. First, their male and female folks can befriend each other but can never marry themselves. Apart from this long system of relationship, this group of people do not carry last in any occasion whether it is war or any kind of competition. Their yes is yes and their no is no. They are the only quarter in Ubulu Uku that can always speak with one loud voice. Udo family Union in Lagos is the strongest gathering any Ubulu Uku quarters can boast of. Their population in Lagos alone can outnumber that of Idumubo, Akwu, Onicha Okpe, Ogbeani, Agbonta put together. Their youth association is not different; it is as strong as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Nigerian political system. Hon. Joan Mrakpor tried them few years ago and the Iron Lady knew what she passed through. With troops of armed soldiers and security officials, Udo people stood their ground. If not for the elders perhaps, they would have seen only the soldiers entry footsteps without seeing that of their exit. But why Udo this time, after all, Udo means peace? My concern about Udo has to do with a story that was told happened there. A certain impotent man was seriously ageing with neither wife nor children. In Ubulu tradition, an impotent man can marry and have children who can equally bear his name and inherit all his properties legally. There is a way it is being done traditionally. It is done in such a way that a wife is married for such men. The wife is allowed to mingle and bear children. This children by all standard, according to Ubulu Uku culture belongs to the man legitimately. So when a wife was brought for Okafor from Uzor Agbor that warm eke evening, many Udo folks knew what was going to happen. The marriage ceremony was an elaborate one. Drinks, food and all manner of celebrations were observed. After the marriage ceremony, everybody dispersed to their various homes leaving the new couple alone in their house. To a normal man, that was a time to show some level of strength in the inner chambers. It was a time to experiment. A time to demonstrate. A time for honeymoon. A time to procreate. A time to show love and a time to do the real “worship” inside the inner temple of love. Even though Okafor was impotent, he knew all these strange happenings. And in order to cover up, he was the first to wake up the following morning. He came outside and sat at the frontage. In few minutes time, visitors who did not attend Okafors function the previous day starting trooping in. Before you know it, gist had starting flowing and Okafor was talking at the top of his voice uncontrollably. At a point Okafor raised a point. He said “If I had known that marriage is like this, I wouldn’t have ventured into it. I did not sleep at night”. When he said it, people were shocked knowing fully well that the newly married gentleman does not have the prowess to perform. Okafor was there putting up a story to cover up his secret, unknown to him that his matter was an open secret. An elderly man that was sitting quietly by the corner replied him “Ntu Kee I tuu o o o, onwe shadene nnye imee n’uchichi” meaning, you lied; you did not perform anything at night. That was the end of discussion and everybody dispersed one by one.
