Nuclear Event in USA on Thursday, 18 December, 2014 at 04:38 (04:38 AM) UTC. Description Omahas consistently troubled Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant has been shut down once again. The reactor, which was unplugged for nearly three years following the 2011 Missouri River flood, has been taken temporarily offline, according to a statement released by the Omaha Public Power District. The utility insists there is no risk to the public, no injuries and no apparent damage to the generator from what is said to be a non-emergency event. The incident, described as a generator lockout automatically shut down the plan at 10:14 a.m. Wednesday - six hours before OPPD released its statement. According to OPPD, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has been notified and the reactor, located 20 miles north of Omaha, is currently placed in a Mode 3 Hot Shutdown, keeping it at normal operating pressure and temperature. The cause of this latest mishap has not been determined. The nuclear plant shutdown occurred one day before the OPPD Board is expected to announce a 1.6 percent rate hike to offset, among other things, higher operating costs at Fort Calhoun.
