Nuku’alofa-March 20: 2.40pm, TONGA DAILY NEWS MAU E TANGATA NGAOHI PAANGA LOI, TAUHI PILISONE Tonga Police is advising members of the public to be careful when they are exchanging pa’anga notes following the arrest of a 42 year old man now charged with producing fake $10 pa’anga notes. The Tonga Police Serious Crimes Unit arrested the 42 years-old man from Halaleva on Wednesday morning and charged him with making counterfeit currency. But there is no confirmation of the man’s identity, with Tonga Police saying they can’t release the nationality of the man they have arrested. Police also seized a pack of fake $10 notes that amounted to $150 in total and a color printer that the man allegedly used to print the notes. The man is currently remanded in custody, awaiting his appearance at the Magistrate’s Court. Tonga Police believes that fake notes are currently in circulation and is warning members of the Public to be aware of this and to check all pa’anga notes before accepting them. To identify genuine pa’anga notes and counterfeits the National Reserve Bank of Tonga have prepared a pamphlet outlining security features to assist the public in identifying genuine pa’anga notes and counterfeits. The Tonga Police Serious Crimes Unit is continuing its investigations into the issue.
