Number needed to treat(NNT): A way of measuring the impact of treatment, which has become popular in recent years, is the number needed to treat (NNT). This is the number of patients we must treat in order to prevent one adverse event. NNT is best used to illustrate the likely impact of treatment given a range of possible risks of the outcome event in the treated population. Number needed to harm: It is important to distinguish between beneficial effects of a treatment (risk ratio 0). If the treatment is harmful then the NNT is referred to as the number needed to harm (NNH). This can be useful to assess the adverse impact of a treatment which has known side effects. QUESTION: Calculate the NNT for Acyclovir trial in EBV (Unreported study). Using; Number needed to treat (NNT) = 1/risk difference where the risk difference is given to be 0.005.
