Number of workplace deaths underestimated Commenting on the latest Health and Safety Executive (HSE) statistics showing that the number of workers killed in Britain fell last year to a record low of 148 people, Robert Baughan, UNISON health and safety officer, said: “The latest figures showing that 148 people died at work last year seriously underestimates the actual number who lose their lives in a day at work. These figures do not include all of those who die as a result of workplace injury and illness, including deadly mesothelioma or due to road accidents. “When these figures are taken into account, UNISON believes the toll will be close to 50,000 lives lost. We are urging all employers to take the health and safety of their workers seriously, including their long-term health and to undertake rigorous risk assessments.” UNISON press release 3 July 2013
