Numbers ch 33-34 The Lord commanded Moses to record the Israelite’s journal from Egypt to the Promised. Chapter 33 lists camp sites and major events that took place between Egypt and the Jordan River. The Lord then gives Moses instruction for the people. Once they cross the Jordan River, the Israelite are to drive out all the inhabitants of the land. They are to destroy their idols and pagan shrines. Then the land is to be divided in proportion to the size of the clans. Moses warns them that if they didn’t drive the inhabitants out of the land, the people would be like a thorn in their side and a prick in their eyes. The inhabitants would vex them in the land they dwelled in, and the Lord would do unto them (Israelite) what he planned to do to their enemy. The Lord gives Moses the boundaries for the Promised Land and tells them to divided in among the 9 ½ tribes. The tribe of Reuben, Gad, and part of the tribe of Manasseh would not inherit any of the land because they chose to the land of Jazer and Gilead to be their inheritance. The Lord chose Eleazar and Joshua to divide the land, but a leader from each tribe would be assigned to help them. Lessons being taught: 1. Don’t settle for less than what God has promised. The tribe of Reuben, Gad, and part of the tribe of Manesseh didn’t receive land in Canaan because they chose to dwell in the land of Jazer and Gilead. The land of Canaan was divided among the other 9 ½ tribes. Likewise, when we don’t wait on the “promise” or settle for what we think is good for us at the time, we forfeit some of our inheritance. 2. Warning comes before destruction. As they cross the Jordan, the Israelites were told to drive all the inhabitants out of the land and destroy their idols and pagan shrines. Failure to do so would lead them to being vexed by these people and causing God’s judgment to come upon them. When we do not obey God’s commandments or follow his directions, we will to suffer the consequences as well. 3. When we stay in the will of God, our destiny and our inheritance is secured; the enemy cannot take it away from us. The Israelite that chose to obey God survived the wilderness and received their portion of the Promised Land. When we chose to stay in God’s will, we will receive all that he has for us.
