Nuremore Golf Despite the storms which have ravished the South - TopicsExpress

Nuremore Golf Despite the storms which have ravished the South West and our neighbour Brittain it hasn’t been a bad winter for golf. True you would have to be a bit of a weather watcher to get the best of it but only once, on St. Stephen’s Day, has golf had to be cancelled at Nuremore. The clever ones, with the modern weather satellites at their disposal, saw that Saturday was always going to be the better day and availed of it. One such weather watcher was Andrew Carolan. Since he returned from his short spell in exile Andrew has been having a wonderful time of it at his beloved Nuremore. He has been to the fore in more competitions over the last few months than he had been for a long time before that. No doubt part of his new success must be based on the fact that he now has decent opposition to play against in the guise of the three young bucks who are his constant playing partners of late. On Saturday Andrew was to the fore once again with an excellent 35 points for the 16 holes played. Playing off a five handicap he had to forfeit one of his shots on the 7th so his efforts were doubly commendable. So much has been written about Cathal O’Gorman of late that readers of these notes must be becoming suspicious. Cathal has found a new life in golf that is as surprising as it is rewarding for him. On Sunday, in the midst of all the wind and rain, he was able to put together 34 excellent points for second place again. Listening to him in the clubhouse after the event one would only wonder how the 34 points were not 40. No doubt the big spur for him was taking the money off his new-found golfing nemesis, Pat O’Leary. Cathal and Pat constantly lock antlers and the cognoscenti would always expect the more senior[ I did not imply elderly] and experienced Dubliner to come out on tops. A year ago there would have been no contest as Cathal’s excellent golf would have been strewn with some from the very bottom drawer. All that has been replaced with the more mature and steady Cathal and it gave him great pleasure on Sunday evening, not alone to relieve Pat of some of his long cherished few shillings, but to beat him on the breakdown for second place. Who says nobody wants to be second?
