Nuremore Golf Unquestionably it was one of the best supported - TopicsExpress

Nuremore Golf Unquestionably it was one of the best supported Novelty Sundays for many a year. Despite suitably seasonal weather those who braved the elements produced wonderful golf and standing at the top of the pile was Ken Murray with a great 41 points. When interviewed afterwards Ken was modesty personified and took very little credit for his wonderful score. Unlike most present day golfers he attributed his success to an over-generous handicap saying that if things had gone right for him during the year he would be off a much lower figure. In fact, when pressed on the matter, he was inclined to believe that 10 would be more reflective of his ability than the 16 he now plays off. Well done Ken and it is wonderful to see a player straining at the bit to go lower . One player who has lowered his handicap considerably over 2014 is Brendan Power. At the start of the year he was playing off twelve and is now playing off 8. Brendan is surely one of the bright lights of Nuremore golf. Every time he steps on a tee he strives for perfection and on Sunday he was not far away. Only for an unfortunate ‘no score’ on the 14th he would have put together one of the best scores in Nuremore this year. As it was he was only beaten on the breakdown by Ken. In third place was surely one of the up and coming golfers of 2014. Shane Maguire is from Davy Fitzgerald country and rumours have it that he is a massive striker and a golfing volcano ready to erupt. He had 39 points on Sunday and his playing partners tell of the number of points left behind owing to his lack of experience. When he hones his skills a wee bit more then surely Shane will be another Rory Mc Ilroy. 2014 has been a great year for the Agnews. Jim already was crowned singles match-play champion and on Saturday he combined with his nephew, John, to claim the foursome’s crown. In the final they annihilated Steven Quigley and Charles Dolan despite this pair playing their best golf ever. It surely takes a mammoth effort to thwart the Townie when he is in his full stride. After playing his best golf for many a year Andrew Carolan was crowned Winter League Champion and when one peruses the scores he produced off 5 then there could be no more worthy winner. And finally the clubhouse erupted into sustained applause when Shaun Goodman announced Liam Daly as the incoming vice-captain for 2015. Liam has been a wonderful friend to Nuremore serving as President, Secretary and Competition secretary. It is players of Liam’s ilk that are the backbone of any club.
