Nurses Should Know…MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) is a viral respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus MERS-CoV. Symptoms include fever, cough, and dyspnea, with a mortality rate of 30%. There is no vaccine or specific recommended treatment for the virus. At this time, all reported cases have been linked to countries in the Arabian Peninsula. A recent case has been confirmed in Indiana, in an individual who had traveled from Saudi Arabia to the United States. An increase in infection rates has led the CDC to issue recommendations to healthcare providers to help identify and reduce the spread of the virus.
