Nurses boycott meeting with minister The meeting scheduled to hold between the National Executives, National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives and the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Thursday, was boycotted by the union. The meeting, which was scheduled to hold at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, was aimed at finding a lasting solution to the ongoing strike by the union. The Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs Division of the Hospital, Mr. Olu Bello, made this known in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Ile-Ife. Bello said the executives of the union walked out of the meeting before its commencement slated for 2p.m. He explained that the union executives had to boycott the meeting due to its late commencement. It would be recalled that the meeting was organised by the Board of Management and the representatives of Minister of Health to discuss the union’s demands. According to him, representatives of the minister include: Dr. Joseph Amedu, Director, Hospital Services, Federal Ministry of Health, and Mrs. Moji Okodugha, Director Nursing Services of the ministry. The deputy director explained the delay was caused by the briefing between the Chairman of the Board, Mr. Matthew Urhoghibe, and the representatives of the minister. Bello said that the chairman was informed of the complaints of the union leaders which prompted him to come out of his office in order to appeal to them. He added that Urhoghibe apologised to them for the lateness of the meeting and told them not to be restless. The deputy director said that the union executives were not happy with the word “restless”, and urged the chairman to withdraw it.
