Nursing homes are filled with people who suffer from loneliness probably more than many of their physical problems. Imagine the emptiness of being bedridden, lying in bed day after day, week after week and even year after year, unable to turn over, bathe yourself or go to the bathroom without help. Imagine lying there, soiled and unable to clean yourself. Imagine the loneliness, the boredom the horror of it all. I challenge you. Spend 1 hour, 2 hours or more in bed, on your back, staring at ceiling tiles. Turn on your TV to the most boring thing you can find and put the remote out of reach. Open a bottle of ammonia and sit it near enough you cant help but smell it. Just lay there, wide awake, not sleeping, no one there but you. See if you can stand it. No phones. No radio. Nobody. Just that boring TV show. Wish you were somewhere else? Go visit someone in a nursing home. Make somebody happy. Make them feel loved, not abandoned. Maybe find something inside yourself you didnt know you had. Or forgot you had.
