Nursing homes must be the new Republican thing since they wanted one so badly in The Villages. Maybe there is something to the "what are we going to do with our aging population" question after all. "In closing, he urged the crowd to spread the Republican message among acquaintances, family and friends. Matt and Don Gaetz had joined the gathering about an hour into it, having spent the first hour visiting with residents, staff and corporate representatives at Signature Healthcare of North Florida a few blocks away. Signature’s corporate Director of Legislative Affairs, Kathy Gallin, arranged for the visit. As the two toured the business and spoke with residents there, and in a brief question and answer period afterward in the facility dining room, much focus was on the need to protect nursing homes from Medicaid reductions and/or other threats in the future. The men were also asked to look into the matter of how much money each resident is allowed to keep when they enter a facility for long-term care. According to one participant, they give up all but $35 of their income toward their care each month because of government regulations that guide the financial rules. Gallin asked the legislators about the state’s Certificate of Need program, which currently controls the number of nursing homes that can be established in a given location. Don Gaetz said he felt that, with a managed care model on the horizon, the Certificate of Need process will become a thing of the past, anyway, and that the forces of private enterprise will take over as the measure of whether a nursing home would be built in a specific location."
