O EMMANUEL 23 December is the day for O Emmanuel or O God with - TopicsExpress

O EMMANUEL 23 December is the day for O Emmanuel or O God with us, the last of the so-called O Antiphons. These antiphons are short-ish phrases added at the beginning and end of the Canticle or Scriptural Song known as Magnificat, used in Evening Prayer. Throughout the year the antiphons are thematic, and from 17 December, guess what the theme is? Christmas? Almost, but not quite. Instead they evoke various titles applied to Christ. Written originally in Latin, the 7 traditional O Antiphons for the final part of Advent are: 17 Dec - O Sapientia - O Wisdom 18 Dec - O Adonai - O Lord 19 Dec - O Radix Jesse - O Root of Jesse 20 Dec - O Clavis David - O Key of David 21 Dec - O Oriens - O Dayspring 22 Dec - O Rex Gentium - O King of the nations 23 Dec - O Emmanuel - O God is with us or O With Us is God The Advent hymn O come, O come Emmanuel is based on these Great Antiphons and is still sung fairly often in many churches. It may not be the kind of music you like, but heres a link to an example of how O Emmanuel used to be sung, and still is in some places. Heres a translation in case your Latins a bit rusty: Latin: O Emmanuel, Rex et legifer noster, exspectatio Gentium, et Salvator earum: veni ad salvandum nos, Domine, Deus noster. English: O Emmanuel, our king and our lawgiver, the hope of the nations and their Saviour: Come and save us, O Lord our God. As Christmas approaches, may know and trust that God is with us. youtu.be/FWGM9bJR2Cs
