O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. 2 Awake, lute and harp! I will awaken the dawn. 3 I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples, And I will sing praises to You among the nations. 4 For Your mercy is great above the heavens, And Your truth reaches to the clouds. 5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, And Your glory above all the earth; 6 That Your beloved may be delivered, Save with Your right hand, and hear me. 7 God has spoken in His holiness: “I will rejoice; I will divide Shechem And measure out the Valley of Succoth. 8 Gilead is Mine; Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim also is the helmet for My head; Judah is My lawgiver. 9 Moab is My washpot; Over Edom I will cast My shoe; Over Philistia I will triumph.” 10 Who will bring me into the strong city? Who will lead me to Edom? 11 Is it not You, O God, who cast us off? And You, O God, who did not go out with our armies? 12 Give us help from trouble, For the help of man is useless. 13 Through God we will do valiantly, For it is He who shall tread down our enemies. God is worthy of our praise for many reasons. Here, David gives glory and praise to God for His power over the nations, and His ultimate victory over all of His enemies. He is not a tyrant in His power, however Verse 4 talks of His mercy and truth, which is far above our ability to even comprehend. A phrase in this psalm is significant, that I rarely hear mentioned. In verse 6, it gives a beautiful purpose to the exaltation and victory of God. It is that Your beloved may be delivered. Isnt that beautiful to contemplate? Have you ever had someone you love and care about deeply in some form of distress, despair or danger? Do you remember (or even have now) your burning desires to see them freed from these trials? It is a desire to do ANYTHING to see them delivered. However, we do not have the ability to do anything. God does, though. He is only limited by His own righteousness. He can manipulate and conquer the nations. He can make kings tremble. He directs the heart of the king, judge and magistrate like a watercourse, wherever He pleases. He can make doctors shake their heads in wonder. Does He always act in this way? No. Sometimes, in His wisdom, He chooses not to. However, He never acts contrary to His ultimate desire to see His beloved, His bride, delivered. Even if that means eternity. My point in this is that we look to God in trust and peace. He is our Deliverer- not governments, constitutions, riches, horses, tanks, bombs, or pastors. God uses these things, but they are but tools in His hands. Let us look to the Master Builder and Defender for our help and deliverance.
