O, Serge! How dare you traduce our English heritage like that - Im outraged, and you as an American have no right... etc etc etc (cont p97) Youre right, though - football, or soccer, is rather shite. I dont mind watching the odd game, be it a kick around in the park or an international on TV, but I got to be severely in the mood for it. At school, I gave it up as soon as I could to partake in what is still my fave sport, road cycling. (Thats another story, of course, and I think you Americans have lost interest since Lance Armstrong was revealed on Jerry Springer... or was it Oprah... to have been the blacket-hattest baddie of all time.) At least you can escape from it in America - we Brits have no respite, at least until the England team put on their usual pathetic performance and get knocked out in the first round. They could save a lot on air tickets, I always think, if they just got a limited-return economy flight. No, itll be stupid St George flags on cars and vans, roofs and balconies, pubs full of drunk people watching large TV screens and hollering Eng-er-lund (it gains that extra syllable during the World Cup - I havent a clue as to why) and perfectly normal day-to-day stuff, like hanging out, proper conversation and any other thing you can think of, cancelled or deferred until after the World Cup or, as I pointed out above, after England have lost.
