OAK LAWN, Ill. (STMW) — Three people were killed and at least 10 were hurt, two of them hospitalized in critical condition, in a multivehicle crash early Sunday evening in Oak Lawn, village officials said. One of the dead people was the driver of a pickup truck that had been driving erratically on westbound 95th Street before crossing Cicero Avenue and veering into traffic stopped at the red light in the eastbound lanes, village manager Larry Deetjen said. The other two people killed were passengers in one of the cars stopped at that light, Deetjen said. The ages and genders of those killed were not immediately known. At least nine vehicles were involved in the incident, which occurred about 4:45 p.m., according to witnesses. Two of the vehicles remained covered with blue tarps as of 6 p.m. Deetjen said “about 12 people” were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, two in critical condition. He said the incident may have started at 95th Street and Western Avenue but did not provide details. The pickup truck also hit a vehicle at 95th Street and Keeler Avenue, Deejen said. “He was heading west. He ran the red light at Cicero and veered into the turning lane of eastbound 95th. The truck flipped in the air and struck more vehicles,” he said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not immediately confirm the deaths. Rick Gile, the area manager of the Mattress Firm, on the corner of the intersection, said he saw the pickup truck come “flying westbound. The east-west traffic was stopped. He somehow got through the north-south traffic. All the cars were parked (stopped) at the traffic light and he plowed into them. The pickup truck ‘ramped’ up a minivan and nose-dived into the rest of the cars.” (Source: Sun-Times Media Wire © Chicago Sun-Times 2014. All Rights Reserved.
