OCHA ROSA United Nations Core Values: Integrity ● Professionalism ● Respect for diversity TERMS OF REFERENCE Internship Reports Assistant POSITION TITLE Intern DUTY STATION Johannesburg, South Africa DURATION 3-6 months (2013-2014) SUPERVISOR Reports Officer 1. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The interns, based in Johannesburg, will be reporting on a daily basis to a Reports Officer within ROSA 2. JOB DESCRIPTION The intern will immerse himself/herself in OCHA ROSA activities, particularly those related to public information and reporting, where he/she will become familiar with international humanitarian emergency response mechanisms. The intern will perform tasks like the following: • Assist in collecting information on humanitarian issues in the region. • Assist in drafting reports aimed at specific audiences, including internal and public reports. • Perform other research-related duties as required. The internships are an excellent opportunity for graduate students to build upon conceptual skills for information systems and apply them in a diverse, dynamic, and international environment in support of the United Nations and the global humanitarian community. The internship is for 40 hours a week. 3. QUALIFICATIONS: a) Education: Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate-level program in: i. Social science (political science, sociology, economics, etc.); or ii. Journalism or media studies. b) Experience: i. Drafting of reports; ii. Researching socio-economic topics. c) Language: Fluency in written and spoken English is essential; d) Other skills: i. Competencies in Microsoft Office (particularly MS Word); ii. Competencies in internet navigation; 4. INTERSHIP INFORMATION: A few key points regarding internships at the United Nations: a) Internships are normally for a minimum of three-month period. Under certain circumstances, an internship can be extended for up to a total of six months. b) Internships are unpaid. The intern is responsible for their own travel, accommodation, medical insurance, visas, and living expenses. c) Interns are not allowed to apply for a job within the UN Secretariat for a period of six months following the internship. 5.
