OCT 18 SERVING GOD OR SERVING THE KING From a Bible Study of the word servants No. 153 - Esther part 2 Mordecai would not bowIn the eleventh year of his reign, King Ahasuerus promoted Haman, one of his officials, above all the other officials. And the king commanded that all his servants within his gate bowed and paid homage to Haman. But Mordecai, the uncle of queen Esther, refused to obey this command, possibly because Haman was a descendant of Agag, an old enemy of Israel. The king’s servants wondered why Mordecai would not bow to Haman. It made Haman so furious that he vowed to destroy not only Mordecai but all the Jews in the whole Persian kingdom. The time for the massacre was set - in the month of Adar, several months away. When Mordecai learned about the plan, he turned to his niece for help. Esther sent her reply back to Mordecai that all the king’s servants, and everyone else, knew that any man or woman who went into the inner court to the king without being called would be put to death, unless the king held out his golden scepter. But Mordecai persuaded Esther to go before the king. Perhaps she had come to the kingdom for such a time as this? After three days of fasting, Esther stood in the inner court of the king’s palace. When the king saw queen Esther, he held out his golden scepter to her. Thus she was saved from death and could make her request to her husband the king ... The kings servants paid homage to Haman and wondered why Mordecai did not. The kings servants knew that anyone who went into the kings inner court without being called faced the strong possibility of death. They followed the dictates of the king without question. But Mordecai and Esther, as God-fearing people, pushed these boundaries, at risk of their own lives. May we be as courageous as they if the time should come. This devotional is based on Esther 3.2 & 3 and Esther 4.11 Chapter for the day Esther 3 Verse for the day All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s provinces know that if any man or woman who goes to the king to the inner courtyard, who is not called, he has one law, to be killed, except if the king extends to him the gold scepter so that he may live ...
