ODónnells 0 : 06 Glenravel 2 : 09 Páirc MácRuáiri. Div. 4 Hurling. Wed 6th aug. Glenravel Hurlers secure League title and promotion to Div. 3 with strong win over nearest rivals ODonnells! Glenravel had to battle hard in the first period but, after taking a few scores, settled in, and after the break dominated all over the pitch, holding the home side to a mere two points. This result clinched the League title for the green and whites with still two games remaining, and promotion back to Div. 3. The Con Magees outfit have a date with Cushendun this coming Sunday as well, in the final of the McCaughan Cup. Also up for grabs is the refixed Junior Feis Final against Ruairi Ogs in the near future. After shooting an early wide, Niall hoisted in a high ball from a free which wee Twig pounced on and slid through a tackle before driving the ball over the bar on two minutes. O Donnells Niall Grego levelled the match from a thirty yard free a minute later. Declan Mc Bride and Fred Scullion combined to steal the ball from an ODs player, then Fred passed to Padge who shot the sliotár right over Joe Mc Caffreys bar in the home sides nets. Glenravel took a two point lead when Twigs doggedness resulted in him lifting a ball and hitting it to a charging Niall, who rammed it between the sticks. On twelve and sixteen minutes the home side levelled this match as Conor Fegan hit a point from play, followed by another converted free from Niall Grego. Young James Duffin found space in midfield and hit a cute pass to Padge, who slotted over his second point of the evening, and Glenravels fourth. With ten left on the clock before the short whistle Twig was winning alot of ball out on the wing, he again got a call for the ball from Niall who obliged by bagging another fine score from forty yards. A sideline cut from Twig found its way to Vic, working at full-forward, who sent a rasper over the bar from deep near the end-line. Grego cut the deficit to : 06 - : 04 with another free on twenty-nine minutes. A ball was cleared by the defence into the O Ds corner and was collected by Twig, he sent the ball in fiercely where the keeper could only bat the ball down, but it nestled in the corner of Mc Caffreys net for a goal. On the poc-out the ref called for the ball for half time. O Donnells : 04 Glenravel 1 : 06 After the interval the home side shot two wides in succession. A few over zealous tackles crept into the game and, from an off the ball incident, Shane O Neill got injured and was replaced with Ron McCann. On thirty nine minutes Decky Traynor shot at goal but it fizzed round the post and wide. Turbo was then introduced for Soda, who had played a fairly solid game for forty minutes. It wasnt until midway through the second half before Niall raised the white flag for Glenravel with a forty yard free. Traynor having a rather quieter game than usual ran out-field to claim a ball, he turned his marker and fed Twig who rifled over the bar to add to Glenravels tally. Conor Fegan pegged over a point from play for the burgundy and yellows to try to eat into the visitors lead. There was an incident when an ODonnells player received a straight red card, for a deliberate strike across Decky Mc Brides arm. This only caused the away team to raise their game as Decky Traynor collected a ball on the wing and ran upfield picking out Vic in space. Evergreen Vic turned on a sixpence and powered the ball beyond McCaffrey in the home nets, raising the green flag for Glenravels second major of the evening!! Conor Donnelly then found his name in the referees book with a red card for an off the ball incident. Walking off the pitch the big Glenravel defender looked dumb-founded. Wee brother Niall stepped up to a fifty yard free, and struck it majestically, splitting the up-rights for a superb individual effort. ODonnells hit the last point in this game deep in injury time as referee Paddy Toner called for the sliotár and confirmed Con Magees return to Division 3 as league winners. For ODonnells, Joe Herald, Conor Fegan, Pol Robinson tried hard, Niall Grego also hit some good scores from frees. But facing Glenravel was going to be a tough task as the away team showed no mercy. After a few early tussles and with the scores level two times, Con Magees raised the bar and scored vital points and a goal to take a five point lead at half-time. After the break our defense closed up and built a wall to shut out any ODs threat. Chris, in nets, was rarely threatened and his poc-outs fell deep into the oppositions box. James Scullion and Decky McBride were solid in defence and, even after receiving a nasty arm injury, Decky dominated his marker. Padge and Shanlee won alot of midfield ball and fed it forward at every opportunity. Niall, Vic and Twig where the pick of the forwards and took crucial scores to take the Glenravel win and the league title! My Man of the Match goes to Brian Twig O Neill for his solid hours work (week after week) in a Glenravel shirt. The wee dual player constantly ran into space to claim the ball, and notched up 1 : 02 in this game. WELL DONE TWIG!!!! Glenravel.
