OELWEIN — The Oelwein City Council formally accepted Councilman Jim Petersen’s resignation in a special session at 6 p.m. Monday. Petersen had resigned (effective immediately) as councilman representing the 3rd Ward in a letter presented to Mayor Peggy Sherrets prior the council meeting one week ago on Jan. 12. The resignation, which had not been expected, could not be acted upon on the 12th because it was not a line item on the agenda. Mayor Sherrets reported it under new business, with formal action to be taken at a special meeting. Petersen’s resignation came after months of health issues that caused him to miss council proceedings and committee meetings. Several times he was present via speaker phone. According to Sherrets, he stated in his letter that health issues were preventing him from representing constituents in the manner he was elected to do. He resigned on his birthday. The mayor gave an open invitation to persons in the 3rd Ward at the Jan. 12 meeting to contact City Hall or her personally if interested in the council seat. At the special session, Sherrets reported there had been a good response to her request. The council was left to decide whether to appoint a replacement for Petersen to fill the remaining 10 months of his term or call for a special election. In a unanimous stand, the council expressed its intention to appoint. The appointment will be made at the next regular council meeting, 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, in City Hall. Mayor Sherrets alluded to having someone in mind to fill the vacancy but when pressed for details or a name, she said that would be revealed next Monday.
