OF DIVINATIONS AND PROPHECIES Kathlyn Q. Barrozo Class of 1991, University of Santo Tomas B.S. Medical Technology My mother used to go to fortune tellers with her former co-teachers. In the past, I often taunted Mama about this particular habit they had of seeking divination just to pass the time. I would tell her, “Ma, fortune tellers only tell you things you really want to hear. Things like ‘one of your children will go and live abroad’, ‘you will enjoy success and prosperity in your family and career’, and ‘take care of your health for there is sickness in your future’ can easily be predictions for everybody. But I don’t need predictions to know that at least one of our family members will eventually go abroad. I know that with hard work and determination, success and prosperity are never far behind. And goodness knows, our family has its own collection of inheritable diseases, so sooner or later I or someone else in the family could die of cancer, heart disease, leukemia, lung disease, etc. It’s purely a genetic thing, folks. Furthermore, with the way we abuse our bodies, with our hectic lifestyles and our unhealthy diets, we’d all be fortunate to live till we are over a century old. They say people nowadays are living longer lives. But if we go back to the time of Moses and other biblical characters, they lived till they were over three or so centuries old! Boy, they were lucky! Imagine fathering many children and seeing your great-great-great-(infinity) grandchildren’s children…my, my, that will be the day. However, if nobody believed in fortunetellers anymore, there’d be more jobless people in the world. Perhaps fortunetellers exist because a Higher Power wanted less hungry mouths and more “gainfully employed” individuals. Perhaps, it is destiny that dictates that we have more prophets and clairvoyants in our midst. Perhaps, when the fortuneteller tells us that one of our family members is going to live in another country, it is a way for us to nurture our families more. That’s because we will eventually get separated from each other. Perhaps, it is destiny that dictates that we will enjoy success and prosperity in life, all so that we should strive hard now for a better life in the future. Perhaps, destiny dictates that we are told early about sickness in the family. This is so we can make better choices now on what we eat, do, and practice. However, I would still not opt to have my fortune told to me or read in tarot cards. I have experienced enough bitterness and suffering to know that I can’t possibly handle word about more of those things in the future. I do not wish to have a crystal ball tell me what is in store for me. For me, my destiny is not to know my destiny. I merely have to wait for my decisions now to bring results soon. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION: 1. Do you go to fortunetellers? Do you believe in predictions? Why or why not? 2. Have you ever followed a fortuneteller’s suggestions? Be able to talk about such an episode in your life. 3. If a fortuneteller told you that you’ll die next week, what is the very first thing you would do? 4. How important is it to you to know things in advance? Would you be willing to pay a huge amount of money just to see the future with a machine? 5. Why is destiny an easy excuse for people who can not control events in their lives? "SHARE LOVE SHARE KNOWLEDGE" iotsonline .
