OFFICER EDWARD C. CALLAHAN MEMORIAL CEREMONY September 16, 2013 will mark the 50th anniversary of Malden Police Officer Edward C. Callahan’s death in the line of duty. On September 14, 1963, at approximately 7:10 PM, Officer Callahan along with his partner, Officer George Hood responded to the A&P Super Market located at 347 Pleasant Street, on a report of an armed robbery in progress. Both officers were shot by one of the armed criminals. Officer Callahan subsequently succumbed to his wounds. Due to Officer Callahan’s strong ties to the Edgeworth section of the city, the corner of Highland Ave. and Charles Street was originally named in honor of his memory. His ultimate sacrifice has also been memorialized at the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial located on the grounds of the State House at Ashburton Park and his name is included among the more than 19,000 fallen officers at The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. In honor of the 50th Anniversary of Officer Callahan’s supreme sacrifice, there will be a dedication in his honor that will take place on Monday, September 16, 2013 at 6:00 PM. The ceremony will take place at the delta across from 347 Pleasant Street where the A&P Super Market was located. Officer Callahan’s widow, Mrs. Mimi Callahan will be in attendance along with his grandson Joshua Redmond, who is currently a recruit at the Boylston Police Academy where upon his successful graduation he will fulfill his dream of becoming a fourth generation member of the Callahan family to proudly wear a Malden Police badge. Also, in attendance will be retired members of the Malden Police Department who served with Officer Edward C. Callahan.
