OFFICIAL VISIT OF THE HONOURABLE DATO’ SRI ANIFAH HAJI AMAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS TO THE REPUBLIC OF TAJIKISTAN AND THE KYRGYZ REPUBLIC 6 TO 10 SEPTEMBER 2014 The Honourable Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will undertake a visit to the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic from 6 to 10 September 2014. The main purpose of the visit is to lobby for support for Malaysia’s candidature for a non-permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council for the term 2015-2016. The Honourable Foreign Minister will be accompanied by senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Malaysia has served on the Security Council three times – in 1965 (along with Czechoslovakia serving in 1964, and Malaysia in 1965), 1989-1990 and 1999-2000. With the theme, “Peace and Security through Moderation” for Malaysia’s candidature to the United Nations Security Council, Malaysia aims to continue advocating peaceful means in the prevention of conflict, as well as promoting mediation as an approach towards peaceful conflict resolution. Malaysia’s candidature has received the endorsement of the Asia-Pacific Group at the United Nations during its monthly meeting in New York on 29 January 2014. Within this group, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has also endorsed Malaysia’s candidature. Our candidature has also received the endorsement of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). During the visit, The Honourable Foreign Minister is scheduled to call on the Presidents of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic as well as meet his counterparts from both countries. The meetings will provide an excellent opportunity for The Honourable Foreign Minister to discuss issues of mutual interest, including bilateral, regional and international issues as well as possible areas of cooperation to further strengthen the relations between Malaysia and the two Central Asian countries. The visits are also expected to enhance Malaysia’s profile as a candidate to the United Nation Security Council, and at the same time, provide the impetus for the further enhancement of bilateral relations and cooperation between Malaysia and the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic.
