Screenshot from Magnum Foundation website MANILA, Philippines – A Filipina domestic worker and street photographer in Hong Kong is on her way to New York University as one of Magnum Foundations Human Rights Fellows for 2015. “All dreams are valid! I’m one of the 2015 Magnum Fellows! I’m going to see New York and finally get a formal education!” Xyza Cruz Bacani wrote as she announced the good news on her Facebook page on Thursday, January 22. The coursework for the fellowship was developed in collaboration with New York University’s Tisch School for the Arts, according to the foundation’s website. OFW-turned-photographer Xyza Cruz Bacani is based in Hong Kong. The 27-year-old, who was a nanny in the country for nearly a decade, is an aspiring photojournalist whose photos have been published in The New York Times and other foreign publications. Rappler also published some of her photos depicting the life of migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong, and those on the 2014 Hong Kong protests. Magnum Foundation is an in-depth, independent documentary photography that fosters empathy, engagement, and positive social change. Aside from the scholarship and coursework, the foundation will support and mentor the photographers by introducing them to photo editors and helping facilitate independent freelance work with prominent, international media networks.
