OGUN BEGINS DISTRIBUTION OF CERAMIC FILTER POTS TO RURAL DWELLERS The Ogun State Government has taken yet another step to reduce the incidence of water borne diseases, particularly in the rural areas of the State. This is so as the wife of the State Governor, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun joined by other top government officials distributed some ceramic water filter pots “Omilero Pots” to residents of Apojola, Olodo, Lubere, Alagbagba, Abule Odesiji, Isale Olodo, Babapupa, Abule Obo, Orile Ilugun communities in Odeda Local Government Area of the State. Addressing beneficiaries who are mostly women, Mrs Amosun said that the distribution of the filter pots was necessitated by the desire of government to promote the well-being of the people as well as eradicate water borne diseases in the rural areas. She admonished the women to take proper care of the fragile pots so that it would serve them for long and would reduce the spread of water borne diseases such as typhoid, dysentery, cholera and diarrhoea in the State. “The advantages of these Omilero Pots are numerous. The pot is small and light weight, but it helps to remove most pathogens and suspend solids”, she emphasised. Speaking in the same vein, Commissioner for Rural Development, Hon Falilu Adebisi Sabitu explained that the distribution of the ceramic filter pot was a deliberate effort of government to reduce its share of the 42% of Nigerians which the 2010 WHO-UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) reports indicated have no access to potable safe drinking water. He said that the distribution of the ceramic filter pots would complement Solar powered and motorized boreholes which had been sunk by the Senator Ibikunle Amosun led administration in 10 rural communities across the three senatorial districts of the State. “Our focus is on the prevention and reduction of these water borne diseases in the rural areas, it would also complement the existing boreholes in the state so that the people can be disease free”. He stressed. Sabitu affirmed that the ceramic pots would be distributed in all the 20 Local Government Areas of the State, saying the distribution done across the Odeda Local Government communities was the first phase. Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Mrs. Busola Ogunyemi said that the ceramic filter pots would go a long way in reducing 99.8% pathogens causing water borne diseases such as typhoid, dysentery, cholera and others. One of the beneficiaries at Apojola village, Mr. Yusuf Akanji expressed appreciation to the Government, saying that the gesture was a step in the right direction to curb water borne diseases in his community. Another beneficiary, Mrs. Bilikisu Amoo from Olodo thanked the State government and the Wife of the Governor for their continuous effort at improving the quality of lives of the people, describing it as a pointer to their mission to rebuild the State.
