OH MY GOD!!! LORD HELP US!!!! EBOLA!!! The sky is falling!!!! THE END TIMES ARE HERE!!! REPENT! We are all going to die!! We cant believe anyone about anything! No one tells us the truth. They are all lying to us! TOTAL bans on air traffic from Ebola countries should be enacted until such time that EBOLA no longer exists. It is all a huge conspiracy. We should all now go directly into our homes, seal the windows and doors and wait to die. Its not even safe to drive on the streets anymore. And its just been documented that it can be spread by simply looking at each other. Or receiving a FB status in which the word Ebola, resides. Half of the people responding are just simply stupid and completely uninformed, and a bunch just like adding to the hysteria, and the rest dont need the discussion, because they are already rational and reasonable. THREE cases of Ebola. No deaths. Exposure limited, and being tracked for quarantine as we speak. There has existed in this country and the world as a matter of fact, a virus that is equally, if not more, virulent and deadly, that we live with as matter of fact in this country, and barely discuss it. In any given year between 5% and 20% of the American population will be affected by the flu. In an average year 200,000 will be hospitalized, and and average of 30,000 Americans will die. There is no cure for the flu. It does have vaccines which guess at the strains which will be most likely for the coming season, with varying rates of success (and some seasons, utter failure). It is airborne, it is highly contagious, and yet no one screams for quarantines. Hell, most employers wont let their employees go home, or STAY home when they ARE actively infected. Many will work because they wont get paid otherwise. We are, in effect, a huge national petri dish for one of the most dangerous viruses on the planet, yet no one blinks an eye. No one seems scared of the flu...and it kills MANY more people ANNUALLY than Ebola has in its entire recorded history. Neither has a cure, and both are treated supportively...and one of them requires direct contact (if you actually bother to believe the experts...) with body fluids and then being introduced into the body by whatever touched the infected fluids through a cut, or by rubbing your eyes, or picking your nose, or eating something touched by unwashed hands. I understand that Ebola is scary because its unknown to us. But that does not justify knee-jerk reactions or conspiracy theories. Yes, it may get worse. But hysteria will not solve that either. Common sense, information, and simple, good sanitation...will go a long ways to controlling a very nasty, virulent virus. There. That. Is. It.
