OH! OUR BENUE, OUR FUTURE “Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it Almighty God! I know not what course others may choose; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death”. The history of slavery shows a slave can be bought or sold; is not allowed to escape and must work for the owner without any choice. Slavery can be traced back to the earliest human records available. It was recorded in the code of Hummurabi as far back as 1760BC, from the 16th and17th centuries; thousands of people were transported from Africa to Europe as slaves to work on farmlands under very harsh dehumanizing conditions. The Bible itself is replete with records of people who were involved in one form of slavery or the other. Slavery is no longer legal anywhere in the world. Through a movement called ‘ABOLITIONISM’ slavery came to end legally in different parts of the world, though at different times. Spain enacted the 1st colonial law abolishing colonial slavery. America did so, beginning with Pennsylvania in 1780. France did it in 1794. Britain banned the importation of slaves into its colony in 1808. The last country to ban slavery was Mauritania in 1981. Beautiful as the history of the end of slavery is, the Bible tells us that man is a slave/servants to anything he yield himself to obey, Rom. 16:16. Benueans!!! I call because early this year, farming communities in over nine LGAs in Benue state were force out of their homes, their homes and farmlands were destroyed and most of them were killed by Fulani herdsmen. They resorted in taking refuge in primary schools and uncompleted buildings all over the state. Four to five months later, they were forced to go back to their homes since most of them were contracting diseases and dying in the camps. A woman, who gave birth to twins in one of the camps, died of bleeding moments later. The twins died two days later owing to lack of medical attention. I personally took a woman in labor to general hospital, to my dismay; I was told by the medical personnel that the government has made no provisions for refuges in the hospital. With my money I bought everything they asked me to, up to methylated spirit, a woman here is in labor but no one cared. They were forced to go back without 1st moving these Fulanis out of their communities and without any form of support. Three weeks ago, in one of these villages, a 15 year old girl and 2 women were raped by nine (9) Fulani herdsmen. These women are Benueans, these women were in their homelands not another’s, yet they were raped by nine uncircumcised animals (Fulanis). Today 2 men were killed while planting millet in their farms. I goes on everyday. The villagers are complaining today that these Fulanis still come to their farms to ask them “Are you sure you will harvest these plants after planting them?” so they make mockery of them in the own lands! People now leave like strangers, squatters, in their lands. Yet we have a government whose constitutional obligation it is to protect the lives and properties of its citizens. Why not stand up and say give me liberty or give me death, for if i die for a noble course, i die a noble man stand up and defend your land. Benue is the only place u can call your own!
