OK--so Im not supposed to be back from holidays until Tuesday, but the time off has given me the opportunity to think about issues that have been concerning me for some time. Over the last few years I have had the privilege of Chairing the SMA and GCMT and have been involved in an advisory capacity with CNHC. Much progress has been made in all 3 organisations and this has been largely down to the quality of the people we work with and the people we represent--it is also based on mutual respect and an understanding of the concept of professional behaviour. Professional behaviour, as defined by most Codes of Ethics, not only includes our conduct in professional practice but in our personal life more generally--and this is the area that has been concerning me, in particular the use of social media. In life not all of us will agree with each other all of the time---but there are ways of expressing and resolving those differences without making ad hominem attacks via twitter or facebook. I must confess that I have been disappointed by some of the postings that have come up on my personal radar (not against me personally!) over the last few months. So a plea from the heart---this industry has made great strides in recent years and much of that has been based on a perception of increased professionalism. You may have an issue you feel strongly about, you may have a grievance against particular individuals---but before you post pause for a moment---take a deep breath---and think! Paul
