OK. Been jonesing for something new and different out of the squier, as much as I love the neck, and as much as I love how true the instrument plays - not a single rattle or buzz - its too bright sounding to use live. I have been wanting a tele a lot lately but I still remember why I dont have one - if not juuust right, they will leave your notes out in the cold, exposed and alone, for all to see. So, mod the 51! Ordered the Wilkinson brass compensated bridge and humbucker tele plate from GFS, had a texas special bridge pup sitting around, and scored the control switch plate off ebay. Everything went pretty smooth, I used a .047uF cap and did the 50s wiring thing to keep from losing treble when rolling back the volume. heres the sticking points - a lot of routing to allow the 3 - way switch, and a bunch more to allow the angled bridge pup to fit. On the bridge =) I actually carved it out like a little cave underneath so it wouldnt show. needed to drill holes under the postioning screws but I just used what I had lying around. I strung it up with 11s, but it was too big sounding, moved to 10s and it likes that much better. Just on the edge of what is necessary to intonate... gigged it last night and I think this might knock my strat out of rotation for singlecoil sounds. The neck pup is surprisingly big sounding but you can still pull off a decent Fool for your stockings tone, and it is matched nicely with the darker Texas Special.
