OK Escondido Facebook Friends....I took the time to send my message to the President.....what about you? Mr. President, I am writing to you in regards to the current crisis of Latin American children being smuggled into the United States. Specifically Im writing to put my typing where my mouth is...Ive challenged my Facebook friends in California to write to you on this matter. Last night, in Escondido CA, the Planning Commission conducted a public hearing on a permit request to use a vacant nursing home facility for a 96 bed shelter, which would house children in US custody, after being smuggled into the country. Needless to say, as in other areas of the country, where such proposals have been reviewed in public meetings, the vast majority of attendees OPPOSED the opening of such shelters. MOST of my FB friends supported the proposed use. I did not...do not, but not for local concerns, since I live in Alabama, but in the bigger context of trying to support actions which will slow, prevent, stop, etc this flood of children immigrants. What I have said to them, via Facebook, is that YOU should use the powers of your Office to lean on the home country Leaders, to prepare to receive back these kids and take steps to prevent more kids from being smuggled towards and into the USA. I went so far as to suggest that I supported YOU using both financial incentives (humanitarian support) to assist these countries OR use punitive measures if they refuse to comply. My purpose in writing is to follow through with my comments that we should take time to communicate with the Decider in Chief. As a rather Conservative Republican, I can tell you that for me, to support immigration reform, it will take decisive action by YOU to secure the border; deal with this specific crisis; and somehow assure the country, you are serious about border security. Im sure the People who opposed the Escondido shelter proposal, would by and large, SUPPORT SUCH A USE, IF....IF the 96 beds were for the LAST of the kids, and not the first ones, to cross the border. The opposition is most likely based on pent up frustration with YOU and your Administrations mishandling of a number of immigration issues. Your actions ANTAGONIZE the GOP and The People generally, to-date. My friends, who are broken hearted that their community cant reach out and assist these CHILDREN, Im sure would like to see you build confidence in THEIR community which would lead to support for this shelter. Americans/Californians/Escondidians are generous, patriotic and heroic (recent fires in North Diego County demonstrated). There is not a child I would not all want to protect and care for...except in the context of not wanting to send the wrong message to Mexico, Central and South America, that there is an open door at our Border. Good Luck. Godspeed. Use your Pen & Phone to solve this trying crisis. Sincerely, Kris Murphy Hayden, Alabama (I was once on the Escondido City Council 1988-92..so I have maintained close contact via social media)
