OK, FB friends, you might want to defriend me (what a great neologism that is!) when you hear about my latest money-saving experiment. I read online (where everything is true and unicorns pass strawberry-scented and rainbow-colored gas) that if you cut your engine off at traffic lights and any other time you are idling for more than ten seconds, you will save enough money and fuel to pay for a new hair style for Donald Trump. So, naturally, I tried it. I ran a tank of gas in my 2004 Mazda 6 (which, because of its sports engine and transmission which I have because I am the epitome of sporty, gets an incredible 15 mpg in town and 17 mpg on the road) and in my 2007 Chevy Impala (which, although it is bigger and heavier than the Mazda gets 16.7 mpg around town and 24 mpg on the highway) and the first tank, I was thrilling to find that the Mazda had improved to 17 mpg or a 13% increase, which aint too shabby, and a calculated 28 mpg with the Impala. I should have known not to trust my mathematical skills, because an invidious error apparently crept into my calculations. And I used the calculator on my phone. The second full tank of gas with both cars, the Mazda got...wait for it...14.8 mpg and the Impala...15.9. So much for my hopes and dreams of wealth for me and energy independence for the U.S. A fool is born every minute, and youre reading something written by one. Defriend away, amigos! I deserve it...
