OK Folks--- Riddle Me this: Am I the Only one who thought Fairmont was Newly proposed and accepted for Home Rule?? I was digging through My Volumes of Fairmont Historical Documents ( Collected them for over 25 years) and came across this gem from 1947. It was then Put on a Ballot ( Rather Than a Board of other City managers) and Fairmont Citizens Had a Vote on whether to go forward with it or Not. *** See attached Photo-- and No Fairmont Historical Society.. You cannot have it or the J Harper Meredith Correspondence. I have from the 1980s ( when we exchanged Letters..LOL ...I will gladly share a copy of any or all But still PO.d about the Hartley Portraits, You good folks slipped away from me some Years ago! :) ) On Here it has Limit of Council to be 7 members ( makes sense It would have expanded.. If Fairmont Had, But Fairmont had actually shrunk.. so another change.) I am just curious ( and I make No jest-- I do not Know.. and would like to!) Did this ballot Fail? 1947( 830 Voters LOL)Only a few thousand Now. Is this Home Rule something different. Did It Pass and FMT Made change in style of Government? Other Than The Tax ( and this is confusing , as well) We we told It would be brought to Public Hearing.. Now Neil Stalnaker had Posted YOU already Passed the tax.. What is the story..? Should Not the Newly elected Council Had the Vote on this? ( Just seems logical?) Anyway To ease anyones mind.. I am Not looking to stir____ here.. I have researched the Tax, and Now find That I do support it.. I am also Curious If 1% Tax is enough.. I was thinking more like 2.5%, and The Option of Any affected Business to Petition for waiver.. Or simply exempt that Industry by Council Vote. 1% simply will not fund the Pensions, and provide for additional City Development.. I did the Math and If BAD Buildings cost estimates are accurate ( and assuming the BF kicks in some nice funding for the work) I do not advocate Just Keep On: Spending: Hiring Officers to stand in schools & accruing Pension Costs, Inefficient operations, or wasteful Budgets.. Those are all going to need culled. and Will. But, with No Money.. It is Dubious any condition We, the Citizens want to improve or to be added, will ever Happen! Members, Public employees, .. Feel free to comment and correct me whee I am wrong..
