OK, I am now tasked in finding a new firearm for the IDE teams. The entirety of the H&K stock of XM8s was sold to the Royal Malaysian Navy Special Forces, PASKAL in 2010. So Im now have to find a replacement. One thats easy to use, has a proven field record, is cheap, and would be something both a former Russian General and Chinese Billionaire could agree on. (Aleksander Borodin and Lao-ze Feng, the former the head of IDE and latter Director General of UNIDA) And it keeps coming back to the worlds most popular assault rifle: The AK-47. Yes, I can hear the screams from the readers out there, but the AK-47 has a proven track record. Yes, its not as accurate as other weapon systems out there, but how many of them were designed to be operated by someone with an hours worth of training? Or can be dropped in a mud puddle, swished around a bit, let the water drain out and then run a bore brush down the barrel and fire? (That may be apocryphal, but still, its easy to maintain than the M16A1.) So heres a challenge to you all: What weapon system would be acceptable to a Russian and Chinese tastes that it would pass muster as the standard arm for IDE teams? It has to be cheap, reliable, operate in multiple environments, and lastly, easy to train random people from the street on.
