OK. I had an epiphany yesterday. For the longest time, decades really, Ive considered CTTE the best. Simply the best. But I was listening to Gates of Delirium, and I realized that, musically anyway, Gates was superior (I almost wrote far superior but I dont want to get carried away. :-) ) In Gates, the music itself is just as inventive, the playing just as technically brilliant, but what makes it surpass CTTE is the way it perfectly ties in to the lyrics, which, in the case of Gates, actually tells a story. The theme of war and peace, the evocation of battles and marching armies is dazzling. And then, after the 15 minutes of the cacophony of war, it ends with the beautiful paean to peace and hopefulness, Soon. (And as a side note, the synth playing of Moraz stands up so well over time. So much of 70s synth sounds so dated and cheesy, but not this. It could have been recorded yesterday. And to this day I cant figure out what kind of patch he used for some of the sounds he got.) So, if you havent heard it recently, here it is. https://youtube/watch?v=EdmUAsU2eXI
