OK, I never thought I would say this but it is time to move the Confederate flag. Sen. Glenn McConnell is moving on to take over at the College of Charleston. The timing is right. You who have been in my house know how much I love that flag but the way it was taken from the Capitol dome and moved to where Main St dumps right into Gervais, it made it even more visible which makes it even more divisive . Of course the NAACP placed a boycott on the State and generally it hasnt hurt us. My understanding is both the general assembly and the NAACP agreed that if the flag came down from the dome, the NAACP would go along with putting it on the grounds. I dont know which side is to blame but the problem is the same. The flag is even more visible and we are sitting here with a boycott on us. How is it hurting us? None of our states Universitys can host a predetermined sporting event because the NCAA supports the boycott. Its hurting my school right now. Carolinas womens basketball team could not host the tournament. Eventually it will affect Clemson and all the state schools. Probably behind the scenes the boycott has hurt us in the past. Im sure at some point the coaches at schools outside the state have mentioned to a potential recruit that our state is under boycott because of the flag. Its hard to measure the full impact but the other side of the coin and better question is, how is it helpful? How does the Confederate flag flying on Gervais St help us ? Coach Spurrier spoke out about it and I know it can potentially hurt all the states schools. We need to get this behind us and all move forward together.
