OK...I was going to be quiet about this...but the urge in me to comment is too much. For the last 3 days just about every school district in the Rockford area has closed school. And every day there has been a stream of social media posts complaining about the whole process. Administrators making the call about whether to cancel classes or not are in a no-win situation. People are going to complain no matter what those administrators do: “District X decided to close schools too soon”...”District X decided to close schools too late”...”Why’d District X decide to close schools at all? Back in my day kids were tough...blah blah blah blah.” As a parent of a student in one of those districts, and as someone who grew up “back in my day”, I believe much of the criticism being thrown at these school districts is unwarranted nonsense. I do understand the concerns of parents who work and need to find daycare for their kids. That’s a legitimate problem, and we as a family are blessed to not have to worry about that. Although it was an issue when I was a kid in a single-parent household. So again...I understand. But going to school when the wind chill was -20 or lower didn’t make me tough...it made me cold...froze my ears...and put me at risk of frostbite and getting sick. “Kids should dress for the weather,” I can already hear people saying. Couple of things: A. Even dressing for the weather when it’s that cold may not help. B. In some districts kids don’t have clothes to “dress for the weather”. Their parents can’t afford it. That has to be a factor in the decision making process. But second-guessing administrators in this particular situation who will never please everyone no matter what call they make isn’t simply questioning authority, it’s a waste of time. Wait a minute...did I just “feed the beast” by my own social media post?...Oh man! Now I’m part of the problem. LOL
