OK, I’ve been out working in the freezing cold all day. My brain cells have melted and I can’t feel my feet. So it’s time for a song. It’s 29 years since singer Ricky Nelson was killed in a plane crash (31 Dec 1985). So here’s a little story of the day I knocked ‘em dead at the HMV store in St Helens with a song from the late great Ricky Nelson. I was waiting in a queue at the counter at HMV. An elderly lady, who seemed not to have been in a record shop in years, jumped the queue. She didnt really see us all at the other side waiting and looked rather lost. She wanted a record, but didn’t know the title, and was giving the name of some artist or other, Gene Pitney, I think. A song about Mary Lou she said. Now that rang bells for me. Her husband had died, and she wanted this song to be played at his funeral. The people serving behind the counter had no idea what song she wanted. Waiting people, clueless assistants, distressed elderly lady who couldn’t make herself understood, it was all getting very uncomfortable. So it was me to the rescue. I worked out that it was more than likely she wanted Ricky Nelson singing Hello Mary Lou. So to make sure I broke into said song! Word perfect. And I was right! That’s the song, she said! Impressive or what?! And I got a little round of applause from the people in the queue (two of them at least!). I think they were glad that their ordeal of listening to me singing was over. Anyhow, HMV didn’t have the record in any case. But it’s a song worth hearing. Always had a soft spot for Ricky Nelson. (And James Burton! Wow, what a guitarist!)
