OK OK, I know that Eric Clapton did a fantastic job both on the original recording of “Layla” in 1970 with Derek and the Dominoes, and on his 1992 “Unplugged” version. That album won 6 Grammys and just the guitar he played on it sold for more than all of my music combined ever will…. ---- BUT, there is still a remaining, nagging, flaw in the unplugged version of “Layla” which has always bothered me. Namely, what happened to the entire end of the song which in its original incarnation was a surprisingly acoustic groove led by the piano and highlighting some wonderful guitar work by Clapton. In 92, there was more than enough piano playing going on at the masterful hands of Chuck Leavell and certainly they COULD have done the ending. But why leave it off? Ugh… it is a crying shame how in 92, that powerhouse group of players didn’t put the end of Layla on their bluesy unplugged rendition. Ok, rant over, but just sayin’, Ed Verner #ericclapton #unplugged #layla #acoustic
