OK Peeps -- heres an unusual request. Im trying to identify an architectural feature I found in the basement of the original Delaware State Hospital. Ill try to describe it for you. Imagine you walk into a room about 10 square. Along the right hand wall is a cement bench about 3 tall, that runs the length of the room. There are square holes in the top of the bench, maybe 4-6 holes, each with a 1 square wooden lid with a handle, so you can pick up the lid and move it. When you do that, you can see that the bench is hollow (imagine a toy chest or a window bench) inside, to a depth of at least a foot or maybe a little more. Inside this hollow space are a series of circular baskets made of thick wire. There is one basket underneath each lid. The baskets do not move. There is space around the outsides of each basket. Any ideas what this might have been used for????
