OK. So I had a notion for an item. Protective Item. Must be held in ones hand as a weapon or a shield might, in order to be effective. When you grasp this item, you temporarily sacrifice some of your highest ability score, up to half. When you release the item, your ability scores return to normal after 2 rounds. You gain a number of temporary hitpoints every round, equal to the amount of score sacrificed, up to a max of the score remaining. IE: You have 20 intelligence. You sacrifice 4. Your INT is now 16. You gain 4 temporary hitpoints a round, up to a maximum of 16. Thoughts on this, mechanically? It just strikes me as an interesting magical item.
