OK, a clear new trend that is emerging in the US media: OMG, careful with sanctions and pushing elite splits, as Russia w/o Putin is worse than Russia with Putin. Mark Adomanis has published such a piece on Forbes, now Julia Ioffe writes the same at TNR. Expect more to come. The irony is that both repeat Putins own propaganda lies that Russia cant exist w/o him, and 1990s under Eltsin were all chaos and darkness (which is not true). My own guess is that left-leaning columnists, who kept supporting Putin in 2000s, and took a pause backing him after Crimea are now back on track with their past theories. But important thing to remember is Putin wont stop if he stays at power. The logic of their survival pushes dictators towards destabilizing their zones of influence (refer to Milosevics case for more details). Oh, and Russia will manage without Putin.
