OK, fellow citizens of East Jordan. Lets all take a collective breath and ratchet back commentary on the issue of the three City Limits signs and the up again, down again Basketball District/Regional Champs congratulation signs. After discussing the issue with your new Superintendent today, we offered to take the basketball signs down until the EJPS School Board can discuss the issue at its Monday night meeting. The City intends to work cooperatively with EJPS to put together a policy on what goes up on the City Limits signs, for how long, who pays for them, etc. Currently, the EJPS is responsible for coordinating any effort to erect new signs honoring extraordinary school accomplishments. In most cases, funds to purchase the signs come from school sports & academic supporters, coaches, athletes & their families. The signs are then ordered, shipped to City Hall, where we coordinate their installation by our City Public Works crew. Obviously, we havent had to deal with this issue in recent times, and many EJPS & City Board members & staff have come & gone. These signs are in the MI Dept. of Transportations (MDOT) highway rights-of-way and all communities statewide have to abide by the same MDOT rules. They only allow a certain-sized sign with certain letter fonts & sizes to be installed on signposts underneath City Limit signs. MDOT limits them to only one sign per sign location. The Superintendent assured us that the Cross Country State Championship signs are safely inside the high school building; they are not in anyones dumpster. The Basketball signs are safely inside the Public Works building, and also are not in anyones dumpster. We realize that parties on both sides of this issue have legitimate concerns and questions. The erection of the signs was intended as a celebration of the efforts of last years basketball team, not as a slight to the former cross country state championship team, nor even this years State Quiz Bowl Champs. There are several options available to the EJPS and the City to reach a consensus on how to handle this in the future. Let the powers that be have a chance to have a conversation on the issue and mutually reach a consensus on how to move forward. Lets do this as a community.
