OK, heres an interesting idea. It turns out the playa dust at burning man is mostly dry clay. If you sift it, hydrate it, shape it, and then fire it, it becomes very hard and deep red pottery. Say you had about 200 four by eight sheets of half inch plywood, and you stacked them into a pile 2 sheets wide and 8 tall. This would give you a 8 x 8 x 8 foot cube made essentially out of solid wood. Then imagine that you designed a 3D design shape, say a geodesic sphere, 8 feet tall, then you figured out which parts should be missing in each 1/2 cross section and used a CNC router to cut those spaces out of each individual plywood sheet. Then, on playa, you assemble the pile of wood, with the pieces missing inside, by screwing each layer down the the next. From the outside, it would still appear to be a wooden cube. Then you mix playa dust into a fine clay paste, and pump it into the form, so that it fills all the cavities inside the cube completely. You let it dry out for a week or two, and finally, during the event you set the plywood form-cube on fire, and in the process the the 3D model contained within the form is fired into a hard and structural clay sculpture that is left over when the entire form has burned away. Just an idea. For now.
