OK its been over a week since we got back from our great North Yorkshire holiday! So - the important question - Whitby fish & chips - is it really the best in the world? Hmmm ...... maybe we didnt sample the right shops. On the Saturday we arrived we had it from the iconic Magpie Cafe (takeaway service = the queue for the cafe was round the block!) Dry, tasteless cod, soggy chips! (OK its summer and the chippies use new potatoes which dont crisp - but Im still buying Maris Piper in Tesco!). The following Friday I went to the Riverside Fisheries voted best fish & chip shop in Whitby by readers of The Whitby Gazette. WOW! Big queue, took AGES to get served - yum I thought - Oh dear. Dry, overcooked cod and yet again soggy chips, but with a slightly nauseous oily odour that Ive had from other (local) shops - maybe theyre using cheaper rapeseed oil that needs changing more frequently than lard or sunflower oil. Im still convinced that our local is the best - Quality Fish & Chips in Newport Pagnell. Only fresh fish - never frozen, and crispy chips EVEN WHEN USING NEW POTATOES! Carry on Gilbert! (^^^)
