OK, last one for a few days, so I’m up to date when I return for days 26-30. Day 25 of 30 day gratitude challenge. As our boys grow up, I’m learning along with them about the US education system – a complete and utter mystery to me, pre-school to high school, anyway, when we arrived. Still mystified and/or bemused by some of its curious rituals and vagaries (prom, pep band…), but we’re almost at the point – college - where I actually start to know something. (Well, according to the offspring, I know nothing about anything, of course. Amazes me sometimes how I’ve lived this long, being so unutterably stupid!). Anyway, very grateful for the wonderful, rigorous secondary (high) school education I had. I always loved school, but a few things that didn’t endear themselves to me at the time, I am now most thankful for. All-girls school? Sidestepped the ”dumbing -down” girls used to (still do?) inflict upon themselves around males. Latin? Took me years to appreciate my Latin teacher’s dry-as-a-bone humour (wasted on us girls) and the boon of knowing the Latinate roots of so many languages. Learning two other languages? Well, duh….. Lots and lots and lots of writing? No comment needed. Netball? OK, some things really ARE irredeemable!
